Risemann, N (2023) Transgender Australia: A History Since 1910 Melbourne University Publishing, Melbourne.

In my opinion, Risemann has created the greatest, most comprehensive history of Transgender culture in Australia ever created. This work will greatly expand your knowledge of Transgender cultural histories, both Australian and more generally, and is an important work for understanding the current failings in Transgender and Gender Diverse peer support in Victoria.

Available both in Ebook and Print.

Perkins, R (1983) The drag queen scene : transsexuals in Kings Cross tell their own story George Allen & Unwin, Sydney.

This is one of the most important historical works for studying Transgender cultures and history in Australia. By approaching Transgender individuals working the streets around King's Cross Sydney and allowing them to tell their own anthropologies, Perkins has collected a collection that is incredibly unique and valueble. As an aside, Perkins would also later go on to lead the Australian Transsexuals Association, and I consider her an incredible icon of Australian Transgender history.

Available from the NLA and other academic libraries.

Stone, S (1992) 'The Empire Strikes Back: A Posttranssexual Manifesto' Camera Obscura, 10(2(29)):150–176. https://doi.org/10.1080/10361146.2012.731485

This text forms the modern basis for the study and discussion of transgender topics in academia. Written in response to both personal and generalised attacks by famed TERF Janice Raymond in her book The Transsexual Empire: The Making of the She-Male, Stone formalises and discusses the ways in which transgender women are viewed and discussed by society, how it relates to traditional, 'cisgendered' femininity, and by doing so, helps create the entire field of transgender academia.

Available via Duke University Press.

Stryker, S (2017) Transgender History: The Roots of Today's Revolution, 2nd edn, Seal Press, New York.

Another formative text regarding the history of transgender rights and culture, this time focused on the United States. Whilst I personally prefer Risemann's Transgender Australia, this book is nontheless incredibly important in contextualising transgender history more globally.

Available both in Ebook and Print.
